Ferrosilicon: Atomised & Milled

DMS Powders
Milled & Atomised Ferrosilicon for Dense Media Separation
DMS Powders Leads the Way
DMS Powders is the global name trusted by mining and mineral processing industries for consistent, high-quality milled & atomised ferrosilicon - vital materials in Dense Media Separation (DMS). As a producer with decades of specialised experience, we continue to lead the global ferrosilicon market through constant reinvestment in our production plants, our team, and in ongoing product innovation.
We don’t just manufacture and distribute ferrosilicon - we support operations worldwide in achieving more efficient separation processes, enhanced recovery rates, and reduced media losses. Our reach spans continents, but our focus remains local: working alongside customers to ensure results where it matters most - in their plants.
DMS Powders:
What Is Ferrosilicon Used For in DMS?
Milled and atomised ferrosilicon are both used in dense medium separation to create a stable, controllable medium with specific gravity high enough to separate valuable minerals from waste material. This media, formed by suspending ferrosilicon in water, is particularly essential in the diamond, coal, and iron ore industries.
The selection between atomised or milled FeSi depends on plant design, cyclone specifications, and density requirements. Both types offer strong magnetic properties, are recoverable through magnetic separators, and have excellent resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

Our Atomised Ferrosilicon Range
DMS Powders produces atomised FeSi through a water atomisation process. This method allows for highly controlled particle shape and size, resulting in improved media stability and reduced consumption.
Atomised FeSi Grades:
- Coarse
- Fine
- Cyclone 60
- Cyclone 40
- DMS 70
These grades are optimised for use in different DMS applications, including primary and secondary cyclones in diamond recovery and in other mineral separation processes requiring precise cut densities. Cyclone 60 and Cyclone 40 are particularly popular for high-efficiency dense medium circuits. DMS 70 offers extra flexibility where ultra-fine control is needed.
Each batch is tested to meet exacting quality standards and ensure repeatable results in every use. Atomised FeSi from DMS Powders remains stable in suspension, settles predictably, and is easily recovered magnetically.
Our Milled Ferrosilicon Range
Milled ferrosilicon is produced by grinding high-grade FeSi granules to a carefully monitored particle distribution. This traditional production method is still in widespread use today and remains ideal for many types of DMS circuits, especially in coal and iron ore applications.
Milled FeSi Grades:
- 65D
- 100D
- 150D
- 270D
- 270F
Each grade is selected based on application requirements, such as density range, cyclone size, and system throughput. Coarser grades (e.g. 65D and 100D) provide excellent recoverability and medium stability for larger plants, while finer grades (270D and 270F) are better suited for tighter separations or use in smaller cyclones.
We continuously refine our milling processes to minimise dust, control shape distribution, and ensure repeatable media performance across varying densities.
Packaging Designed for Real-World Efficiency
All our ferrosilicon, whether milled or atomised, is packaged to handle the challenges of industrial sites. Packaging options are selected for:
- Moisture protection

Frequently Asked Questions: Milled & Atomised Ferrosilicon
What’s the difference between milled and atomised ferrosilicon?
Milled ferrosilicon is ground mechanically from solid lumps and is typically angular in shape, with a wider particle distribution. It’s ideal for coarse separations and robust media circuits.
Atomised ferrosilicon is produced by water atomisation, creating spherical or irregular rounded particles. This type gives superior stability in suspension and is often used in precision circuits such as those for diamond recovery.
How do I choose the right grade of ferrosilicon?
Your selection depends on:
- Cyclone size and type
- Density cut-point requirements
- Media recovery system
- Plant throughput
Contact our technical team for tailored advice. We’ll assess your plant specs and recommend the most efficient solution.
Is your ferrosilicon suitable for diamond recovery?
Yes. Our Cyclone 60, Cyclone 40, and DMS 70 grades are widely used in diamond processing applications worldwide. These grades are tailored for high-density, high-sharpness separations and are manufactured with consistent particle sizing to reduce misplacement and improve diamond yield.
