The Properties of Ferrosilicon

There are two main types or grades of Ferrosilicon products produced by DMS Powders, namely Milled and Atomised Ferrosilicon, which are further divided into grades. The selection of the right grade of Ferrosilicon is essential to ensure process efficiency.

The properties of Ferrosilicon are interrelated, and ultimately determine in-circuit behaviour. It is thus important to select the right Ferrosilicon grade for your process for the best outcome.

The properties of Ferrosilicon includes:

Density: The percentage of Ferrosilicon solids in the medium directly determines the medium density, which can be increased or reduced by adding more Ferrosilicon or water to reach the desired density. The density of the mixture is usually close to that of the mineral (diamond) that needs to be retrieved, to ensure effective Heavy Gravity Separation.

Viscosity: The medium viscosity is determined by the medium’s resistance to flow (in other words the consistency). And because the properties of Ferrosilicon are interrelated, the higher the medium density, the higher the medium viscosity will be. Milled Ferrosilicon grades provide mediums with higher viscosity, and Atomised Ferrosilicon grades achieve a lower viscosity. Viscosity is quite difficult to measure, but is an important property of the medium and can affect the efficiency of the separation process.
Stability: Stability is an important factor that determines the behaviour of the medium in the separator. The medium stability is determined by the tendency of the solids present in the medium to settle out. A high stability medium is achieved by a high concentration of solids, fine particles size in distribution and irregular shaped particles (milled Ferrosilicon) amongst others. A stable medium is desired, and the higher the viscosity, the higher the stability of the medium, because these properties are interrelated.
