Mineral Separation and Ferrosilicon

Mineral Separation and the Use of Ferrosilicon – DMS Powders
Many mineral separation processes make use of the laws of gravity in order to separate minerals from mineral bearing material.
This process is called Heavy / Dense Media Separation. The process of gravity separation is simple and affective, efficiently retrieving minerals from other material as an initial phase of the mineral separation process, after which further processing and separation will take place.
Ferrosilicon plays a big role in mineral separation by means of Dense Media Separation.
DMS Powders:
What is Ferrsilicon and how is it used in mineral separation?
Ferrosilicon, a powdered substance, is widely used in Dense Media Separation to separate diamonds and other minerals from mineral-bearing material. But what exactly is Ferrosilicon? Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon (FeSi). The unique properties of Ferrosilicon makes it ideal for the process of Dense Media Separation.
Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants the apply the Ferrosilicon by mixing it with water, to form a thick pulp until it reached the desired density, which is close to the density of the specific minerals to be retrieved. Once the mixture has reached the right density, the diamond-bearing material is submerged. A whirl movement allows the mixture to mix with the diamond-bearing material, which will initiate the separation process. Because the mixture is just the right density, it allows lighter particles to rise to the surface, while heavier particles will sink to the bottom or be forced out the sides of the whirling mixture, efficiently separating diamonds and minerals from other material.
Many diamond and mineral processing plants around the world make use of this effective separation process to separate minerals form other material.
