DMS Powders:

Manufacturer of Ferrosilicon for Dense Media Separation

Dense Media Separation is a gravity separation process that  is used for the extraction of diamonds, and other minerals where there is a distinct difference in density in comparison to the unwanted waste material. In the process of Dense Media Separation in diamonds, a powdered ferrosilicon (which is an alloy of iron) is mixed with water to form a defined pulp density (heavy liquid), close to the density of diamond (3.52 g/cm3). The diamond bearing material is then added to the mixture in a cyclone, which will start the separation process of the heavier minerals from the lighter material. Heavier minerals will then sink in the slurry, whilst the lighter materials will rise to the surface. Dense media separation is widely used in the diamond mining and processing industry due to its effective results and easy execution.

By means of strict quality control standards we produce a product with the following benefits:

Trusted Ferro Silicon Supplier

DMS Powders is a South African ferro silicon plant and ferro silicon supplier producing dense medium ferrosilicon powders for mineral processing operations across the world. Our products are used in Dense Media Separation, also called Dense Medium Separation, Heavy Medium Separation or the sink-float process, where accurate density control is needed to separate valuable minerals from waste material.

For diamond recovery and other mineral processing applications, the quality of the ferrosilicon powder used in the DMS circuit affects medium stability, viscosity, density control, medium recovery and plant performance. A DMS plant needs a ferro silicon supplier that understands more than supply alone. The right supplier must understand particle size, grade selection, circuit behaviour, magnetic recovery, packaging, transport and technical support.

DMS Powders has been part of the ferrosilicon manufacturing sector since 1949. The business started with the production of Milled Ferrosilicon for Dense Medium Separation in the extraction of diamonds. Production facilities were later relocated to the current site near Meyerton, South Africa, and atomised ferrosilicon production started in 1967. Today, DMS Powders continues to produce and market ferrosilicon powders for DMS applications, supplying clients locally and internationally.

South African Ferro Silicon Plant with Global Supply Experience

Choosing a ferro silicon plant is not only about price per tonne. Dense media separation plants rely on consistency. If the FeSi powder does not behave as expected in the circuit, the plant may experience unstable medium density, higher losses, harder process control, more frequent adjustments and weaker separation efficiency.

DMS Powders manufactures Milled and Atomised Ferrosilicon powders for dense media separation. These products are used in diamond processing plants and other mineral separation circuits where the difference in density between valuable minerals and waste material allows for effective separation.

Our production experience is supported by long-term customer relationships, experienced product technical support and knowledge of global logistics. This matters to mining houses, recovery plants, mineral processors and procurement teams that need reliable ferrosilicon supply without unnecessary delays or uncertainty.

As a ferro silicon supplier, DMS Powders supports customers with product selection, grade information and technical input. This helps plants select a FeSi product suited to the specific application, whether the plant requires milled ferrosilicon, atomised ferrosilicon, coarse grades, fine grades or cyclone-grade material.

Ferro Silicon for Dense Media Separation

Dense Media Separation is a gravity-based mineral separation process. A dense medium is created by mixing ferrosilicon powder with water to form a slurry with a controlled density. Once the correct medium density is reached, feed material is added to the separation circuit.

Particles lighter than the medium float, while particles heavier than the medium sink. This is why the process is often called the sink-float method. In diamond processing, powdered ferrosilicon is used to help create a heavy liquid close to the density required for effective separation. Diamond-bearing material, such as kimberlite, is introduced into the medium so that heavier valuable material can be separated from lighter waste material.

Ferrosilicon is suited to DMS applications because it offers several useful properties for dense media circuits:

  • High specific gravity
Ferrosilicon helps create a dense medium that can be adjusted to the required cut density for mineral separation.
  • Magnetic properties
FeSi powder can be recovered from the process using magnetic recovery systems, which helps reduce medium loss and supports lower operating costs.
  • Corrosion resistance
Ferrosilicon offers practical resistance in plant environments where water, solids and process movement are constant.
  • Abrasion resistance
Dense media circuits involve high movement, slurry flow and contact with mineral particles. Abrasion resistance helps support product performance in these conditions.
  • Predictable medium behaviour
A controlled particle size distribution supports better medium stability, improved density control and steadier DMS plant operation.

Products Supplied by DMS Powders

DMS Powders manufactures both Atomised Ferrosilicon and Milled Ferrosilicon products. These grades are used in Dense Media Separation plants and are selected according to the needs of the process.

Atomised Ferrosilicon

Atomised ferrosilicon has a more spherical particle shape. In many DMS applications, atomised FeSi can support lower viscosity and more consistent consumption. It is often selected where stable circuit behaviour and efficient medium recovery are key concerns.

DMS Powders supplies the following Atomised FeSi grades:

  • Coarse
  • Fine
  • Cyclone 60
  • Cyclone 40
  • DMS 70

These grades are used in different DMS applications, including primary and secondary cyclone processes. Cyclone-grade ferrosilicon is commonly used where plants require tight control of dense medium behaviour and separation cut points.

Milled Ferrosilicon

Milled ferrosilicon has a more angular particle shape. Milled FeSi can provide a medium with higher viscosity and strong stability, depending on the grade and application. It is often selected where a plant needs a cost-effective DMS medium and where the circuit is designed for milled material.

DMS Powders supplies the following Milled FeSi grades:

  • 65D
  • 100D
  • 150D
  • 270D
  • 270F

The correct grade depends on the DMS plant design, feed material, required separation density, cyclone or vessel setup, recovery circuit and process target.

Choosing Between Atomised and Milled Ferro Silicon

A reliable ferro silicon supplier should help customers compare product behaviour, not only product names. Atomised and milled FeSi powders have different physical characteristics, and these differences affect how the medium behaves inside a plant.

The main factors to consider are medium density, viscosity and stability.

Medium Density

Medium density is controlled by the amount of ferrosilicon solids in the water mixture. Adding more ferrosilicon increases the density, while adding more water lowers it. In a DMS plant, the target density is selected according to the mineral that needs to be separated and the density of the unwanted waste material.

Viscosity

Viscosity refers to the resistance of the medium to flow. If the medium becomes too viscous, separation efficiency can suffer, and plant control becomes harder. Milled ferrosilicon grades generally produce higher viscosity media, while atomised ferrosilicon grades generally produce lower viscosity media.

Stability

Stability refers to how well the ferrosilicon particles remain suspended in the medium. A stable medium helps the plant maintain separation efficiency and control the cut point. Particle size, particle shape, solids concentration and medium density all affect stability.

Because these properties are connected, grade selection should be made with the full circuit in mind. A product that performs well in one DMS plant may not be the correct option for another plant with different equipment, feed size, density targets or recovery conditions.

Ferro Silicon Supplier for Diamond Processing Plants

DMS Powders has a long history in the supply of ferrosilicon powders for diamond recovery. Dense Media Separation is widely used in diamond processing because the method can separate material according to density differences. Where the valuable mineral and waste material differ enough in density, DMS can provide a practical first-stage separation process.

In diamond plants, FeSi powder is mixed with water to form a controlled medium. The diamond-bearing material is added to the medium, and the separation process begins. Material with a lower density floats, while heavier material sinks or moves to the sides of the separation equipment, depending on the plant design.

A ferro silicon supplier for diamond processing must understand the cost of medium loss, unstable density, poor recovery and inconsistent plant performance. DMS Powders supplies ferrosilicon grades developed for DMS applications and supports customers with technical product knowledge, helping plants select the correct grade for their process.

Ferro Silicon Supplier for Mineral Processing and Heavy Medium Separation

Although DMS Powders is strongly associated with diamond recovery, ferrosilicon is also used in other dense media and heavy medium separation applications. DMS is used in mineral processing where density differences allow separation between valuable minerals and gangue.

Applications can include:

  • Diamond recovery
  • Coal preparation
  • Base metal ore processing
  • Precious metal ore processing
  • Industrial mineral processing
  • Recycling and scrap separation processes

The same principle applies: the plant needs a dense medium with the correct density, stability and flow behaviour. For this reason, ferrosilicon grade selection should not be treated as a general purchase. It should be linked to the plant’s operating requirements

Packaging for Safe Handling and Transport

Ferrosilicon powders must be packed in a way that protects the product and supports safe, practical handling. DMS Powders’ packaging is designed for ease of handling, safety, product integrity, durability and water resistance.

This is important for both local and export customers. Poor packaging can expose the product to moisture, handling damage or transport-related issues. Good packaging helps protect the FeSi powder from the plant of manufacture through to delivery and storage.

For procurement teams and DMS plant managers, packaging quality is part of supplier reliability. A ferro silicon supplier should not only manufacture the product but also ensure that the product can be transported and handled in a practical, responsible way.

Technical Support for Ferro Silicon Grade Selection

Every DMS plant has its own operating conditions. Feed material, cyclone performance, vessel type, separation density, process water, particle size, medium recovery and plant maintenance all affect how ferrosilicon behaves in the circuit.

DMS Powders provides experienced product technical support to help customers choose suitable ferrosilicon grades. This support is useful when plants need to:

  • Select between atomised and milled ferrosilicon
  • Compare FeSi grades for a specific DMS application
  • Improve medium stability
  • Reduce ferrosilicon losses
  • Improve magnetic recovery
  • Adjust medium density
  • Manage viscosity concerns
  • Match product grade to cyclone or plant design

The correct FeSi grade can support steadier plant control and more reliable separation. It can also help reduce avoidable product losses and process interruptions.
