About diamond mining and processing using Ferrosilicon powders
Diamonds are found in Kimberlites, which occur in the upper sections of the Earth’s crust. Kimberlites are diamond bearing rocks that are presented in pipes, dikes, veins, and sills. Once the diamond bearing material is mined, it needs to be transported to a diamond processing planting, usually in close proximity to the diamond mine. Firstly the material will be crushed and milled, after which it will go through a dense media separation process (should this method be used in diamond separation). This is where the Ferrosilicon Powder is used.
The process of Dense Media Separation is used for the extraction of diamonds, and other minerals where there is a distinct difference in density in comparison to the unwanted waste material. In the process of Dense Media Separation in diamonds, a powdered ferrosilicon (which is an alloy of iron) is suspended in water to form a defined pulp density (heavy liquid), close to the density of diamond (3.52 g/cm3). The diamond bearing material is then added to the fluid, which will start the separation process of the heavier minerals from the lighter material. Heavier minerals will then sink in the slurry, whilst the lighter materials will rise to the surface. Dense media separation is widely used in the diamond mining and processing industry due to its effective results and easy execution.
