Dense Media Separation, also called the ‘sink-float’ method, requires the use of Ferrosilicon powders.
The Ferrosilicon is mixed with water to form a fine suspension until it reaches the desired density (close to the density of diamonds). The diamond or mineral bearing material is the submerged into the pulp mixture (in a cylindrical tank), in order for dense media separation to take place. Particles that are denser than the medium will report to the process underflow as sinks, while less dense particles will report to the process overflow as floats. Dense Media Separation is widely used as a diamond extraction method, due to the effectiveness of the process, and because it is cost-efficient.
