Ferrosilicon Production Process – DMS Powders

The process of Ferrosilicon production involves the reduction of sand or silica (Si) with coke / coal (C), and then reacting it with iron (Fe) which can be obtained from scraps. The Carbon in the coal is required to remove the oxygen, leaving a pure Silicon and Iron product.

A submerged electric arc furnace can also be used in the production of Ferrosilicon. Quartz is melted together with steel scrap and a reductant. A hot liquid alloy is formed and collect in a sand bed. Once cooled the product is broken into smaller pieces, which will then further be crushed to the desired size.

Ferrosilicon can contain varying silicon content, depending on the production process and needs. Ferrosilicon mainly have a proportion of 15%, 45%, 75%, and 90% silicon content, with the remainder comprising of iron.

DMS Powders:

Ferrosilicon form DMS Powders – Leading manufacturer of Ferrosilicon products

DMS Powders is a leading producer of Ferrosilicon in South Africa, distributing our quality Ferrosilicon worldwide. There are two types of ferrosilicon produced by DMS Powders, namely Milled Ferrosilicon and Atomised Ferrosilicon (which are defined in terms of their production process). Atomised Ferrosilicon possesses a more spherical shape, where Milled Ferrosilicon is more angularly shaped.

The following Ferrosilicon products are manufactured by DMS Powders:

  • Atomised Ferrosilicon: Coarse, Fine, Cyclone 60, Cyclone 40, DMS 70
  • Milled Ferrosilicon: 65D, 100D, 150D, 270D, 270F

Properties of Ferrosilicon:

  • Density: The density of the Ferrosilicon will depend on the ratio of Silicon to Iron, ranging from 2.4 g/cm3 to 5.1 g/cm3.
  • Odour: Ferrosilicon is odourless, but can be harmful if inhaled.
  • Colour: The colour of Ferrosilicon ranges from light to dark grey / silver.
  • Combustibility: The dust particles of Ferrosilicon are flammable.
