What is a Gravity Separation Process?

Gravity Separation is an industrial process used to separate two components from a suspension medium, through the use of gravity. One popular Gravity Separation method that is used in diamond and mineral processing, is Dense Media Separation. Dense Media Separation involves the use of Ferrosilicon powder, which is mixed with water to achieve a mixture of a very specific density. The mineral bearing material is immersed into the tank with the mixture (cyclone), to start the separation process. The cyclonic movement will initiate the separation of the minerals and diamonds from the material, by pushing the diamonds and minerals to the sides or bottom of the tank. This is because the two components have different densities, making the heavier material sink, and letting the lighter material float. This process is also referred to as the 'sink-float' method. Gravity Separation is also used in a number of other applications such as recycling, separating steel / metals from waste, slag re-processing, the recovery of precious metals and many more.
