The production process of ferrosilicon basically entails the reduction of silica, sand and coke, whilst in the presence or iron. Depending on the silicon content, this process will either take place within a blast furnace or electric arc furnace. There are two types of ferrosilicon that exits, as produced by DMS Powders, namely milled ferrosilicon and atomised ferrosilicon (defined in terms of their production process). Atomised ferrosilicon possesses a more spherical shape, where milled ferrosilicon is more angularly shaped.
Atomised ferrosilicon is generally used in the Dense Media Separation applications, and can be produced in different grades. These types are directly related to size distribution, namely Coarse, Fine, Cyclone 60, Cyclone 40 and DMS 70, used in applications where the separating density is greater 3.0sg (specific gravity).
Milled ferrosilicon is widely used in applications where the separation medium is lower than 3.2sg. Again, a range of milled ferrosilicon is produced directly related to the size distribution, namely 65D, 100D, 150D, 270D and 270F.
