Magnesium Manufacturing Process

Magnesium is produced by combining Silicon and Magnesia, which results in the formation of Magnesium and Silica. The most commonly used and cheapest form of silicon is as a ferrosilicon alloy. Although there is iron present from the alloy, it is but a spectator in the reactions.

One method to produce Magnesium, is called the Pigeon Process. This batch process requires the mixing of finely powdered calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon, after which it is briquetted and charged in retorts made of nickel-chrome-steel alloy. The hot reaction zone portion of the retort is either gas fired, coal fired, or electrically heated in a furnace, while the condensing section equipped with removable baffles extends from the furnace and is water-cooled. The distillation results in the production of very high purity magnesium crowns, which are then re-melted and cast into ingots (blocks) for further processing.

Atomised Ferrosilicon is produced by melting Ferrosilicon with high grade steel in an induction furnace. The fine particles produced are then separated via screens, and classified according to grade.
